I'm going to New York, and now I need a place to stay

I spontaneously applied for an exchange semester (or two quarters) at Berkeley Manhattan, and I today received the okay! That's all very exciting for the german boy I am, so now I'm hustling to prepare everything for the trip. So here's a question: where would you NY Jalops look to find a reasonably priced place to stay? Is it straight Craigslist browsing? I don't need anything fancy, basically just a bedroom with a desk to study and access to a kitchen and bathroom. You know, the essentials for a business student.

Any help is appreciated, I'm sure there is enough local know-how here on Oppo. Have a WRC Subaru driving through downtown for your troubles.

You might want to look at an extended stay. They are basically hotel rooms with a small kitchenette. I lived in one for a couple months during an internship. If you go on craigslist a lot of them want 1 year leases.

New Jersey is a good bet.

Is the commute bearable? I heard rather good things about NYC's subway system.

that exact intersection is where I take the bus home from uni every single bloody day.

However this photo must've been pretty old since one of the major bus companies seen in the photo was liquidated over 8 years ago...

Try Brooklyn; it'll be cheaper and Manhattan is only 15-20 minutes on the subway.

It definitely is older - Subaru left in 2008, and the car looks like a 2004 model.

Depends where in NJ you live, if you live just over the river in Jersey City or Hoboken it's about a 30-40 minute commute door to door to Mid-Town and Lower Manhattan.

Edit: Also don't try hold NJ transit to German public transportation standards. 15 minutes late, isn't late by NJ transit standards...

If you pick the right areas, yes its fine. I live 2 minutes from the trains and the tunnels so any NJ transit trip is fairly quick. I only suggested NJ because the rent will be 25% cheaper.
